We hiked two miles in, then did a series of switchbacks leading up to a secluded lake. Now, I'm more of a strolling hiker and struggle with uphill sections. But the trail to get to the lake is fairly steep, but with good views. For some reason, I had the song "Climb Every Mountain" in my head on the way up.
Then we got to the lake and it was lovely. We took a break under the shade of some trees and had a snack. The view was wonderful.
Again, since there is a part of be that will always be a Kansas girl, I keep forgetting that most likely there will be opportunities for even better "photo ops" along the way. See, I really am going on these hikes and not just sending my camera along with someone else!
I do have to say, REI certainly knows their stuff. The backpack was very comfortable despite being 20 pounds heavier than my previous one. My new boots were more compfortable than my old shoes ever were. But that may be due to the fancy new socks too!
And yes, hiking poles like the one in this picture really do make a difference. I highly recomend them. When going uphill you can pull yourself up tall steps. When tired you can lean against it. When going downhill you can brace yourself if your knees and ankles feel tired, or if you tend to be a klutz in general. As an added bonus, they also exercise your arms and shoulders for that true total-body-workout!
But wait! There's more! At around mile six we entered a wonderful meadow. Once I got past hearing Bambi's mother saying "You must be careful in the meadow," in my head, I then proceeded to get the song "The Sound of Music" stuck in my head.
All-in-all it was a great hike. I think this hiking thing is growing on me.
