What is Hike For Discovery? Hike For Discovery is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's adventure fundraising program that prepares people to experience a natural wonder in a special way. The goal of Hike For Discovery is to increase funding to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission while promoting fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
While I'm training, I am raising funds to help The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma. More than 712,000 Americans are battling these blood cancers. Your support of my participation in Hike For Discovery will help bring them hope and support. Please make a donation to support my participation in Hike For Discovery and help advance the mission of LLS. You can donate on-line on my fundraising website (http://pages.hikefordiscovery.org/rm/rockymt08/atin) or by sending me a check made out to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
How did you learn about this? I suppose you could say “blame it on the dog.” When my guide dog in training didn’t make it through the program, she was career changed. My husband and I decided that her training shouldn’t go to waste, and she should begin a new career as a blood donor for Animal E.R. Orianna now donates blood, which is given to animals who need surgery or transfusions due to emergencies. (Ask me for more info if you would like your dog to become a donor too.) I then felt bad about making my dog donate but not me, so I became a blood donor as well. This led to me also registering to be a bone marrow donor if someone who needs a match comes along. Through this program I received a flier about the Hike For Discovery and raising money to help find a cure for blood cancers. It sounded like a fun thing to do, and I signed up. So all of this is Orianna’s fault.
How does this work? Do I sponsor you per mile hiked? I am asking for donations to be make into my account, to help me reach my goal of $2,600 by August 15th. It is not a "per mile solicitation" like some other organizations do. When I achieve my fundraising goal, I will then be eligible to participate in an end-of-season hike at Rocky Mountain National Park, along with other Hike For Discovery participants from around the United States. At this final hike we will be hiking with cancer patients, survivors, and family members, as well as other fundraising participants. From what previous hikers have told me, it is a fun experience to hike with someone from New Jersey hiking in the Rocky Mountains for their first time ever.
